Alphabet Concepts ABC Twiggles

A Word about Our Approach:
ABC Twiggles® is structured to introduce children to alphabet concepts using a multi-sensory approach. Each letter is presented to children in a variety of contexts (i.e. tactile, auditory, kinesthetic, and visual). In this way, multiple pathways are formed for enhancing children’s retention of the names of the letters and their most common sounds. This multi-sensory approach incorporates activities that directly stimulate the five senses with exercises in dramatic play, art, movement, music, cooking, and literature exploration. This approach meets the needs of children with different learning styles and learning needs due to the multiple means through which children can access the content.

Recommendations:

1. In order to adhere to the position statement of the NAEYC with respect to best practices for early childhood education, it is recommended that alphabet concepts are taught in thematic contexts with a multi-sensory teaching approach.

2. A multi-sensory teaching approach allows for each letter to be presented to children in a variety of integrated contexts (i.e. tactile, auditory, kinesthetic, and visual). In this way, multiple pathways are formed, enhancing children’s ability to memorize the letters of the alphabet and their corresponding sounds. This multi-sensory approach incorporates activities that directly stimulate the five senses with exercises in dramatic play, art, movement, music, and literature exploration.

3. ABC Twiggles® is designed to meet the individual preferences of members with respect to the order in which they teach their children the letter sounds and shapes. If no preference is already established, ABC Twiggles® recommends teaching consonants first, beginning with the letter sounds that are most easily accessible to children and ending with c and g, both of which have a hard and a soft sound. After consonants, introduce the vowel sounds. ABC Twiggles® provides materials for teaching both short and long vowel sounds. Members can choose between introducing both sounds for each vowel simultaneously, or introducing short vowel sounds first followed by long vowel sounds. The following letter sequence illustrates this approach:

Recommended ABC Twiggles® sequence:

  • m-s-f-l-r-t-p-n-b-h-k-d-v-j-w-x-y-z-q-c-g-a-o-i-u-e

Our Approach to Vowel Sounds:

ABC Twiggles® builds background knowledge in children regarding alphabet concepts. The content familiarizes children with the general traits of alphabet letters. It provides an introduction to the alphabet that is intended to precede in-depth phonemic awareness and phonics instruction. For this reason, only vowel sounds at the beginning of words are included. Furthermore, both the short and long sounds are introduced. Children naturally come into contact with both sounds at the beginning of words in emergent reader literature. By establishing a general awareness early on that some letters can have more than one sound, children are less apt to be confused when they encounter a word with a beginning vowel sound that does not match the sound learned. In addition to ABC Twiggles®, KidsSoup® maintains a wide selection of materials and activities that can be used to provide extended coverage of specific vowel sounds.

Our Approach to C and G:

ABC Twiggles® builds background knowledge in children regarding alphabet concepts. The content familiarizes children with the general traits of alphabet letters. It is an introduction to the alphabet that is intended to precede in-depth phonemic awareness and phonics instruction. For this reason, both the soft and hard sounds are introduced for the letters Cc and Gg at the beginning of words. Children naturally come into contact with both sounds at the beginning of words in emergent reader literature. By establishing a general awareness early on that some letters can have more than one sound, children are less apt to be confused when they encounter a word with a beginning Cc or Gg sound that does not match the sound learned. In addition to ABC Twiggles®, KidsSoup® maintains a wide selection of materials and activities that can be used to provide extended coverage of specific consonant sounds.
